“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.”
―Les Brown
The above quote should strike a chord with many, if not all, who happen upon this post. Take a minute and think about how it applies to you, personally. What have you had, or do you have, a burning desire to do? To create something, to achieve something, to move somewhere, to become something?
Life and circumstances can crush and suffocate dreams and ambitions if we let them.
I’ve been watching a lot of interviews recently with people who have simply got things done. We all need a kick in the ass from time to time, especially if we have gotten into a rut. Or we are procrastinators who need tough love when it comes to moving us along. There’s no shame in admitting that. Like I said, life and circumstances can crush and suffocate dreams and ambitions if we let them.
Does that mean you can simply achieve all that you desire through hard work and constant application of self to a set goal or vision? Very possibly, yes. But not in every case. That thing called life can throw curveballs, as well as crush and suffocate. But you have to roll with the punches and don’t quit until the fat lady sings.
So what do you do? Where do you start? How do you make the dream become a reality and not something thats buried with you when your time is up?
It helps to write things down. Then read what’s on that piece of paper, revisit it daily and most importantly start doing. Become your own cattle prod. It doesn’t matter if you dont know what you’re doing. It really doesn’t. You can learn and refine as you go along and there is no teacher like experience.
Paint yourself into a metaphorical corner. Tell a select few or everyone you know what you are hoping to achieve. On the days you feel like throwing in the towel (and there will many be days like that) that pressure you put on yourself and the accountability it brings could be the difference between success and failure.
I could go into more detail here but I won’t. Why? because I will expand on this business in my upcoming book.
I haven’t written it yet, I have no idea how it will look, what it will be called or when it will be completed. But I’m painting myself into that corner now. Today. Putting pressure on myself to ensure something I feel like I can and need to do becomes a reality and not another headstone in that graveyard of good ideas.
Watch this space.
Rick.
Indeed we all need a jolt with a cattle prod at times or little would get done, but it's self motivation that's most difficult. This made me think as time really is all we have.
Rick there is a book or two in you waiting to put pen to paper, if not a library, you've got plenty to tell I'm sure... a deadly read is on the horizon then, I look forward to reading it.
Very committed statement Rick. You write like you talk. Punctuated. Snappy with lyrical prose. In the context of you signalling the intention of writing a book I think it's a good thing to share your goal. I have found in my life that to keep things to myself however or perhaps just telling a select few helps keep the energy in. So you don't have to spend it convincing people how, or when it's going to be complete, or why! Keep creating content. There will be an audience for it I am sure.
